Disney Scores Rare Primetime Emmys Win Over HBO, Netflix With 36 Trophies Media Play News

January 16, 2024

The delayed “75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards” Jan. 15 may have generated record low 4.3 million viewers on Fox, but that doesn’t diminish the fact the Walt Disney Company (ABC, Disney+, FX, Hulu and National Geographic) led all media companies with 36 wins, driven led FX/Hulu top statue winner, “The Bear,” with 10 awards from both televised ceremony and the Creative Arts awards a week earlier.

Perennial Emmy top guns, Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO/Max and Netflix, finished No. 2  and No. 3 with 31 and 22 Emmys, respectively.

Top performers for HBO included “The Last of Us” with eight trophies, “Succession” with six awards, and “The White Lotus with five awards. Netflix’s top winner was limited drama “Beef,” with eight trophies.

Beef’s Ali Wong made history with her win, becoming the first Asian-American actress to win Outstanding Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and the first woman of Asian descent to win an Emmy for a lead role.

FX/Hulu’s “Welcome To Wrexham,” the docuseries look at actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ acquisition of the third oldest professional soccer club in the world, Wrexham AFC, based in Wrexham, Wales, took home five awards.

McElhenney, a Philadelphia Eagles football fan, perhaps presaged the low TV audience wondering on social media why the Emmys telecast conflicted with the Eagles vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers playoff game.

Apple TV+ tallied 10 Emmys, followed by Disney+ with 9 statues, Prime Video with six, Paramount (MTV, Comedy Central, VH1 and Paramount+) with five; Hulu with four and Peacock added two awards.
