Fandango Renews Exclusive Ticketing Partnership Deal with IMAX Media Play News

January 30, 2024

Fandango, the big online movie ticketing service, and IMAX Corp. on Jan. 30 announced a new multi-year agreement for Fandango to continue to serve as the exclusive ticketing partner for IMAX digital platforms in the United States.

Fandango is the parent company of Vudu, a leading digital retailer in home entertainment’s transactional space.

Under the agreement, Fandango and IMAX will collaborate on ticketing products and features across IMAX.com, the IMAX app, and Fandango platforms. Both IMAX.com and the IMAX app relaunched in 2023.

Fandango in a news release said the agreement will provide users with faster mobile ticketing, higher film title sorting functionality, reserved seating, social ticketing, mobile payment technologies, “and new tools that provide ticket buyers with innovative, one-of-a-kind ticket purchasing experiences.”

“We are thrilled to expand our relationship with IMAX, allowing Fandango to enhance the moviegoing experience for millions of our customers across the nation,” said Jerramy Hainline, EVP at Fandango. “This renewed agreement reinforces our dedication to providing the best theatrical experiences and bringing the magical world of cinema closer to the hearts of movie lovers.”

2023 was the highest-grossing year ever for IMAX at the North American box office, and the company delivered over $1 billion at the global box office for only the third time in its history. More than 1 million Fandango customers purchased IMAX tickets in 2023, with the ticketing service selling more than 30% of the IMAX domestic gross box office for Oppenheimer during opening weekend, and over 25% for the film’s full theatrical run. Oppenheimer is nominated for 13 Academy Awards and is currently running in over 350 IMAX locations across the United States.

Oppenheimer was released on disc and through digital retailers late last year, with high demand for the 4K Ultra HD edition leading to shortages at retail and sky-high prices on eBay. According to Circana, the film was the top physical media seller in December 2023 and came in 10th for the year.
