Call of Duty To Make ‘Open-World Campaigns’ The Norm, Report Claims Esports.net

It has been revealed by a recent report that Call of Duty 2024 will ’embrace’ an open-world campaign that has been created entirely from scratch. It’ll be the first of many, as this report suggested that, beyond COD 2024, which may be ‘Black Ops Gulf War’, this will become the norm for COD campaigns. In recent years, Activision’s studios have worked on making Call of Duty a more broad, wide-open franchise, but it’s yet to go fully open world. Could we see the first-ever open-world environment in Call of Duty 2024?

In the exclusive report, it was stressed that Call of Duty 2025, which as of yet doesn’t have a lead developer lined up, will also be an open-world title. In the last few years, open-world titles have gone from strength to strength, with many titles getting much more impressive over time. We’ve seen enormous universe-scale maps, gargantuan biomes, and complete freedom presented to players in the most stunning of ways in gaming of late. Why shouldn’t Call of Duty follow suit and offer its players a massive, immersive world?

First-Ever Open-World COD Game?

It was said in the report that Call of Duty 2024’s premise will see players (along with a squad) navigate a map that’s ‘akin to Far Cry’. There will be enough ground to cover that a fast travel system will be needed, and vehicles will be made available, too. That’s by no means a new concept in the Call of Duty space – the major titles have featured land, sea, and air-based vehicles for several years now. It wasn’t said exactly how large this open-world environment will be.

It could be argued that Black Ops is the biggest Call of Duty sub-franchise ever made. It’s rivalled by the likes of Modern Warfare, but while Modern Warfare has undergone an entire reboot, the Black Ops timeline spans five games that are all tied together. This year’s title – which is rumoured to be ‘Black Ops Gulf War’ – will be the sixth Black Ops title to be released.

Last year, Modern Warfare 3 was released to a relatively positive reception. Its success was hampered somewhat by claims that it was ‘just a DLC’ to Modern Warfare 2, but the multiplayer platform shone through. It had a super-short campaign that could be rinsed in just three hours, but the COD Zombies mode attached to the game had quite a lot of meat on its bones to keep players placated. There are high expectations for this year’s Call of Duty title, which has reportedly been in development for years and has a campaign that has been assembled by Raven Software.
